We develop the brand’s personality by ideating on Brand Concepts and Personality Keywords.

	3&nbsp;Design

We then translate that&nbsp; Positioning and Personality into a Visual Identity System and apply it to all the things.

	Our long time partners at Straightaway Cocktails had the opportunity to build a one-of-a-kind airport cocktail bar and retail experience at PDX.

Straightaway’s brand is all about honoring the past while looking to the future: putting a modern-day twist on classic cocktails, and wrapping them in an easy-to-enjoy package. With the Portland Airport context in mind, we we paid homage to futurist movements of all eras, and applied Pacific Northwest sensibilities and materiality, all through a present-day lens.&nbsp;

	<img width="2800" height="1830" width_o="2800" height_o="1830" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8a23dd6958dac38b89519dab89be10923b07fabe97c3ef442af354c4229cc6ee/Hero-Image.jpg" data-mid="250801655" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8a23dd6958dac38b89519dab89be10923b07fabe97c3ef442af354c4229cc6ee/Hero-Image.jpg" />

<img width="2800" height="1830" width_o="2800" height_o="1830" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8bbbadc63e202b069e9765bd2b54ca04b14f476593341e5bfe59c6467c2aa3d2/Hero-Image-1.jpg" data-mid="250801665" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8bbbadc63e202b069e9765bd2b54ca04b14f476593341e5bfe59c6467c2aa3d2/Hero-Image-1.jpg" />
In our research, we looked to the Golden Age of air travel (1930s-1970s), when flying was a thrilling affair. Optimism of this new technology permeated society, with futurist imaginings making their way into popular culture, especially in airport interior design. We were also inspired by Northwest Regional style, a midcentury architectural philosophy valuing simplicity and a connection to the natural environment with roots in our Portland hometown.
These two points of inspiration came together in a concept we called Northwest Futurism, ambitious optimism that looks to the stars while staying grounded in beautiful Pacific Northwest nature.

Visions of the Future
Important inspiration for this project are Futurist art and design movements from the 1930s-1970s, from art deco to the atomic age. Dynamic and imaginative, the visuals of these movements included sweeping lines and echoing shapes, mixed with a textural richness that brings depth to paintings and interior design alike.We looked to airport restaurants and lounges from that era, as well as previous versions of the Portland airport, to understand and synthesize the retro-futurism aesthetic. Marked by a high level of design considerations, and an eye to the future, it was not uncommon for airports and airplanes to have distinct interior strategies that were designed with a space-age vision.

<img width="2320" height="924" width_o="2320" height_o="924" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4fa0302fbbe293f8f5ff65bc3638e747c2258f57bef63865be93faba753e43d2/Inspiration-SAW.png" data-mid="250801696" border="0" data-scale="91" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4fa0302fbbe293f8f5ff65bc3638e747c2258f57bef63865be93faba753e43d2/Inspiration-SAW.png" />

<img width="2800" height="1830" width_o="2800" height_o="1830" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9425d4ad30d734d229d1fa39478f9aa88035a0ae9f934f3c6db266df9ce9585d/Hero-Image-5.jpg" data-mid="250801697" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9425d4ad30d734d229d1fa39478f9aa88035a0ae9f934f3c6db266df9ce9585d/Hero-Image-5.jpg" />

The space is Straightaway’s twist on the mid-century airport bar: taking cues from the past, creating the future, sourcing from our surroundings, all while creating a joyful universe. The brand’s convivial hospitality largely informed the design. We wanted to create a space that feels intimate: a respite during a busy day of travel where folks can relax with a finely crafted cocktail.

The color and textural story in the space is a marriage of Straightaway’s brand: full of energy with vibrant pops of yellow and blue, and the palette of our Northwest surroundings: lush and vibrant greens, doug fir, and moss-inspired upholstery.
We made sure the colorful products play a part in the material story as well, adding vibrancy to the retail side of the space. We selected natural materials wherever possible, such as stone, ceramic, and wood. This was all highlighted with chrome details for contrast and that sleek space-age feel.&nbsp;

Futurist shapes accent the space: the undulating ceiling, the sliced cloud light fixture, the reclaimed wavy wood walls, the portal-like columns flanking the space, the geometric channels in the banquette upholstery.
As Straightaway’s partners for almost a decade, we collaboratively led the vision for the space alongside their team. The year-long project was a rigorous exercise in brand story-telling, spacial design, and navigation of the Port of Portland’s design and construction requirements. With the help of many collaborators, we designed a space that uniquely serves travelers, shares Straightaway’s story, product, and ethos, and evokes the lush environment of the Pacific Northwest.

	Capturing the light. XOXO is an experimental festival for independent artists who live and work online. A robust and enthusiastic community has formed around the festival since it was first held in 2012, connecting regularly throughout the years, even during off times and in between events.&nbsp;After a few years off, founders Andy Baio and Andy McMillan decided to hold one last XOXO. We created a visual identity to send them off, centered around the impressions it leaves behind, and the beauty of the community that has grown from it.

︎ XOXO Looks back on years of connection for online community

	<img width="2880" height="1920" width_o="2880" height_o="1920" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/19d55fff3fdbf86453a255f5bf1d493032342656884a4156257246cac395cbfa/04.jpg" data-mid="217487168" border="0" data-no-zoom alt="XOXO fest badges. Concept
What makes XOXO particularly special is the community. We started thinking of these lovely individuals as many leaves on a big tree. Then we imagined ways those leaves influence the world beyond the tree. Shadows came to mind—the peaceful pattern of dappled light through the leaves, positive and negative space dancing together, dynamic and always changing.

<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7fd712382da093eba3d1490635b455f11615509eda68a20abb2d037eaaa2a1af/XOXO-Hold-Animation---Yellow.gif" data-mid="217497336" border="0" data-no-zoom alt="An animated version of the pattern. Brand Identity
We created a pattern using this dappled shadow—a dithered version, hinting at the internetty underpinning of the fest as well as the disbanding of XOXO into little bits that will go on to form new things. The color story consists of calming shades of blue, punched up with energetic yellow and purple, for both quiet and lively moments.

A strong type system was important for the brand, as many of the pieces are copy-heavy. Avara by Velvetyne echos the angular fluidity of the pattern for headlines, while VCTR Mono by Vectro Type lends a soft typewriter feel to all the body copy.

Patrick Murphy brought these patterns to life via the magic of animation.

Another theme we kept coming back to is the way folks take what resonates with them from XOXO and use it to grow new projects / ideas / things. Cody from Human Shapes collaborated with us on a flower motif, where futuristic blooms burst open. We applied that motif to the entrance, a lively welcome to the last XOXO.

Continuing our shadow motif, we wanted to capture a snapshot of this intangible thing that XOXO is/was. We made a cyanotype from the shadows of the trees at Washington High School (where the festival is held) as a literal impression of XOXO, so everyone gets to take a little piece of Portland and XO home with them. Field Notes printed the cyanotype across the whole press sheet, so there are 18 unique covers that all fit together to form one big piece.

Personal note: I (Ellen) have attended every XOXO. The first time I visited Portland was in 2012 for this odd little festival my partner, Cody, had seen on Kickstarter. We loved the city so much, we ended up moving here less than a year later from Omaha, Nebraska and have been here ever since. XOXO has been quite influential in my life and I’m so grateful to be a part of this community, and honored to have played a tiny part of the very last one. In the words of my friend Darius Kazemi, “The XOXO dream is dead. Long live the XOXO dream.”

	Bringing Bangkok-style Chinese food to Portland, OR. Yaowarat is the latest concept of Earl Ninsom, a chef and restauranteur known for introducing Portlanders to hyper-regional Thai food. Ninsom grew up in Bangkok eating the distinct Chinese-Thai cuisine that has been honed in Bangkok’s Chinatown, Yaowarat. He partnered with long-time Portland big hitters—Eric Nelson (Phuket Cafe, Eem), Sam Smith (Tusk, Sweedeedee), and Kyle Linden Webster (Expatriate)—to make it happen. Press:

Concept
The restaurant pays homage to the dense and layered neighborhood upon which it’s based—Yaowarat, Bangkok. To develop an understanding of the hyper-region-specific menu and culture, our team embarked on a research trip to Bangkok. Through discovery in the neighborhood, we knew the space needed to harness the vibrant energy of Yaowarat Road. It’s a lively tourist destination rich with vendors, the scents of street food, crowds of people in wonderment, and endless bright signage.

Brand Identity
We were tasked with developing a brand that transported diners to the sensory-rich neighborhood. Inspired by the dense signage and colors seen in the Yaowarat neighborhood, we set the brand in an electric, primary-based color palette, paired with text-heavy lockups set in Thai, Chinese, and English.

We designed a bootleg Shell Shuan Shim sign (like Bangkok’s version of a Michelin award) and modeled our main sign off the huge vertical signage found on Yaowarat road.

Interior Design
In true Bangkok fashion, we kept the existing elements of the previous restaurant and layered on top. On the bar side, we painted every surface an intense red, then added patterned wallpaper and art we had sourced from vintage malls in Bangkok. The dining side is calmer, with a cloud of glowing hand-made lanterns floating overhead. The bathrooms offer a special surprise, one not to be missed in person.

We had great fun sourcing everything we could (between stuffing our faces every 2 hours) while in Bangkok, including lanterns, fabric, and all the art in the space.

	Portland’s favorite square-shaped pizza. After helping the Ranch team with their Beaverton location, Eric and Richard brought us in to design their new flagship spot in Montavilla from the ground up. The space was developed as a template for future Ranch locations, while also bringing their sister coffee shop LoRo into the fold. The environment marries the two concepts and is equally fit for folks looking to hang out while sipping coffee, or for families enjoying an easy evening out.Press:

Concept
The previous Ranch locations have a playful aesthetic, a bit referential of 80s arcade interiors, while the visual identity we created for LoRo has a sunny disposition. We saw an opportunity to elevate the interiors of this new space while maintaining the fun and laid-back quality that both brands embody. The resulting interiors have a decidedly modern feeling that leans futuristic without losing that familiar feeling of the classic pizza shops we know and love.

Process
The existing space was quite blank—there were no anchored seats in the space other than in the narrow back hallway, and the front counter encroached far into the front dining area. There was a lot of open space that had yet to be utilized. The room was in dire need of sound dampening, with a tin ceiling that echoed and amplified every conversation. While Ranch is the primary business, we were also presented with the challenge of incorporating LoRo’s branding and coffeeshop offerings.
<img width="1440" height="2160" width_o="1440" height_o="2160" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/681a6101e81d842ba057fc7fd22aa913922e1727b6ac2854edd2cc530e6201d2/Ranch-20.jpg" data-mid="213131644" border="0" alt="Our new floorplans" data-caption="Our new floorplans" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/681a6101e81d842ba057fc7fd22aa913922e1727b6ac2854edd2cc530e6201d2/Ranch-20.jpg" />
<img width="1440" height="2160" width_o="1440" height_o="2160" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7403fbfd8c31efb58b7360feb04d12bb43bde0949944623206035c5ac696767e/Ranch-19.png" data-mid="213131689" border="0" alt="The space before work began" data-caption="The space before work began" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7403fbfd8c31efb58b7360feb04d12bb43bde0949944623206035c5ac696767e/Ranch-19.png" />

Our main goal was to create a smooth customer flow, where the steady stream of folks ordering at the counter doesn’t crowd people enjoying their food. We also focused on making the seating feel more anchored overall. This meant: shifting the counters back to make more space in the dining room, defining the ordering pathway, creating different dining zones for a variety of flexible seating, and building a central banquette island that felt cozier and more protected than loose tables.

<img width="2880" height="1920" width_o="2880" height_o="1920" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3f7cd8f8fd45158bbbf63b421b6a38ede641827c25106be6142b68abd754711f/Ranch-16.jpg" data-mid="213130730" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3f7cd8f8fd45158bbbf63b421b6a38ede641827c25106be6142b68abd754711f/Ranch-16.jpg" />
Our material palette finds unity in similar textures and material throughout the space, but has details that are distinctly “Ranch” or “LoRo” to help diners understand how to utilize the space.

The concrete walls and tin ceiling made for a cacophonous space, so we added tall curtains, ceiling baffles, and ample upholstery to dampen sound and soften the space. We also commissioned a textile piece by local artist Tori Wheeler as a creative focal point that simultaneously mitigated echoing in the waiting zone.

We carried this motif throughout the space, including outside with a tile mosaic sign.

	Straightaway’s Society for Discerning Sippers is a drink subscription service that offers more value to customers than just a routine product delivery.&nbsp; Each parcel contains limited edition and yet-to-be-released cocktails, imbuing a sense of surprise and play in every delivery. We were brought on board to develop of concept that felt engaging, playful, and a bit mysterious.Press:

Concept
Irreverent fun is at the center of Straightaway’s personality, and we wanted to maintain this sense of play. What arose was the Super Secret Sipper Club. It draws inspiration from classic mystery narratives, and membership club experiences. It encourages members to become Straightaway sleuths, providing clues to upcoming drinks, and a Sipper Society pin—if you know you know.

<img width="1260" height="1575" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1260/q/75/i/e2ae9beae63cf76bc168408b962835d71bfd6fffc574d62d4d9f664d5b1bf2d2/05.jpg">

Design and PackagingInspired by classic mystery novel covers, we created a brand that piques curiosity and invites members to play along. When Sippers sign up, they receive decoder coasters, a members-only pin, and clues to be unscrambled to uncover the forthcoming cocktails. Later, a shadowy box appears on their doorstep.&nbsp; Inside are two mystery cocktails (with a flexible label system so Straightaway could easily create more.) The result is an intriguing and engaging sub-brand for Straightaway’s biggest fans.

	Thai pastel meets lush oasis in NW Portland. Until now, Langbaan has existed as an in-the-know-secret behind its sister restaurant, Paadee. Chef and owner, Earl Ninsom, partnered with Eric Nelson to expand on the concept and pair the tasting-menu restaurant with a more casual daytime spot. Out of this, Phuket Cafe was born. Half ode to the colorful streets of Old Phuket Town, half lush hidden oasis, the new location offers a Thai dining experience unlike any other in the city.Press:

Phuket Concept &amp; Design
One part nostalgic, one part surreal — when you come across Phuket Cafe, you feel instantly transported to another place, as if you’re on a train headed straight to Phuket. It’s buzzing with the energy of a city center and the anticipation of arriving at your destination.&nbsp;Like the town itself, Phuket Cafe—made up of the exterior and bar side of the space—takes influence from vibrant elements of both Western and Eastern design. Outdoor diners may be seated at a “ticket counter” or in the streetside “train car.” The visual identity references the tactile experience of Thai travel, taking cues from paper tickets.

Langbaan Concept &amp; Design
If Phuket Cafe is the journey, then Langbaan is the destination. We kept the elements of surprise that make Langbaan unique—the semi-hidden location, rotating menu, and arresting flavors—and translated that into a lush oasis behind Phuket’s bright exterior.&nbsp;Langbaan’s identity remains the same as their previous iteration, with new interiors tucked inside the other half of the space. Wood screens, deeper greens, and a thicket of plants create a darker, cozier feel. Hand-hewn tiles and patinaed surfaces provide a textural, time-worn quality. Our custom wallpaper features the native Ti plant, incorporating some of Phuket’s pink to connect the two sides.<img width="2600" height="1700" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/2500/q/75/i/6a0d032aa1ad43e1cdef7144aaa7ccd71bb6ab398d39d12e0e121182dcf9b151/209.jpg" style="width: 706.888px; height: 462.196px;">

	A new look for alcohol-free cocktails. FBFW is a woman-led N/A beverage company based in the Pacific Northwest. They approached our team with the need for updated packaging, which would begin with a brand refresh. Their current brand reflected the hand-crafted ethos of their product, but had pain points around legibility and brand retention. We sought to further invite customers into their captivating brand story.Press:

Strategy and Concept

After auditing the brand, we recommended not only a packaging update, but also a brand refresh. FBFW strongly believes in the power of human connection, and that you don’t need alcohol to have a great time. We wanted to capture the spirit of FBFW while elevating the design to convey the quality of their product. We sought to update the logotype, color palette, and packaging to deliver a sophisticated and joyous brand.

Design
The N/A market is saturated, so we developed a brand that catches your eye on the shelf. We refined the color and type systems to feel bolder and brighter, and paired this with illustrations&nbsp; that told a larger story of each cocktail. We worked with FBFW’s longtime illustrator, Emily Brown, to develop papercut illustrations that spoke to the human connection that their drinks might be a part of.

	As the Zula owners stepped into an existing space, they sought to develop a sense of warmth that their menu centered on. Their food journey had been solidly rooted in Tel Aviv, and they wanted to bring the feeling of a distinctly Tel Aviv style restaurant to Portland. This meant refined and eclectic food, warm and casual hospitality, and a connection between the kitchen and diners.

Concept &amp; Visual IdentityZula is Israeli slang for a relaxed gathering, and we wanted to recreate just that. Our goal was to deliver a brand expressive of warm family get togethers and the energy of Tel Aviv.&nbsp;The brand’s design takes cues from vintage Israeli show posters, with bold funky wood type and colorful papers. Halftone photos celebrate the ingredients of mediterranean cooking. The brand is laid-back and low-key to let the food shine.

Interior Design
The restaurant previously felt overwhelming in size, so we developed a new seating plan for a cozier and grounded experience. We created a new opening to the kitchen that connected the diners to the hearth of the restaurant, and warmed up the room with a richer color story, patterned textiles, and vintage tchotchkes sourced by the clients themselves.

	A neighborhood staple, refreshed. To celebrate a decade of business, PaaDee approached us for an update. The menu has always been inspired heavily by Thai comfort food: the kinds of things the owners ate at their grandma’s house growing up. They wanted the restaurant and brand to reflect their cozy Thai roots more effectively, as well as evoke a more lively attitude.

Concept &amp; Visual Identity
After clarifying what was tonally missing from the brand, and looking at family photos from past trips home to Thailand, it only made sense to lean into Thai Grandma’s House: a comforting place where one never leaves hungry.&nbsp;A portrait of Grandma became the center of the brand, complimented by bright and lively typography in both English and Thai.

Interior Design
We approached updating the the interiors to evoke the indoor/outdoor nature of so many homes in Thailand. Shades of warm wood and highly crafted design reflect the Thai architectural sensibility, while treasured objects and plants style the space to feel more like home. A new floorplan provided more anchored seating and comfort for guests, while offering clearer pathways for service.&nbsp;
